1977 Yamaha RD 400 / RD 350 Cafe Racer.
What we have here is a 1977 rd400 with a rd350 motor and charging system, and many mods.
Many of the parts are new or near new. I've owned this bike for about 5 yrs. Over that course of time I've pretty much stripped down the whole bike and brought it back to what you see here. I don't ride it enough to justify keeping it anymore. I've maybe put on 1,500 miles since I've owned it. Spent most of the time rebuilding it. Fun, fast little ride but it's got to go.
CHASIS
Repainted frame and swing arm. Bronze swing arm bushings. Tapered roller stearing stem bearings. Newer brake pads front and rear. Stainless steel braided front brake line. Drilled front rotor. Wheels painted red. Newer chain and sprockets. Tires are Pirelli Super Sport Phantom +1 front 100/90 v 18 rear 4.00 v 18 and are in good shape yet. Lots of tread. Forks have been semi polished look good. Need seals but I have them to go with the bike. Clip on handle bars. Fiberglass seat/tail and side covers. Moto Carrera rearsets. Lighting, controls, and such work good.
ENGINE/MOTOR
RD350 engine # 351-305863
RD350 motor rebuilt about 600 miles ago. The rebore was done in the fall and I assembled the motor over the winter. Spent the summer breaking in the motor. Cylinder rebore by Moto Carrera. Art Pro X piston kits. Oem yamaha wrist pin/ small end bearings. Replaced all seals and gaskets. High temp paint. Stainless steel bolt allen bolts. Stock porting and compression. Running 32:1 premix. Pro Flo reed spacers. Boyseen dual stage fiberglass reeds. Bored RD400 carbs with Y boot and K&N filter. DG chambers. Dyna electronic ignition.
Clutch could use some attention I think. It does not slip, but it isn't very progressive at all. it's kind of an in or out affair. Also the motor sounds like it has a bit of piston rattle at idle when it is cold. It only seems to do it at idle. If you rev the motor it quiets down and once it warms up fully it seems to be fine. It's done this from day one on the rebuild.
Motor runs great otherwise. Plenty of power. Revs quick. Pulls hard. Has a pretty smooth power band with the stock porting and DG pipes. Jetting is close, but could probably be dialed in closer by a good two stroke tuner. Currently is set up with the RD400 bored carbs(to 29mm I think), stock slide, 5L1 needle, O-8 needle jet, 250 mains, 27.5 pilots.
APPEARANCE.
Frame is repainted gloss black. Flat black paint was done by myself with rattle cans. It's about 6 coats of Duplicolor flat black. Red Wheels were already painted when I got the bike. Still looks pretty good. Mostly need a cleaning. The little bit of chrome on the bike looks good. I didn't put a whole lot of $ into the paint and such. It's a low budget job, but looks pretty good. Dent in the tank under the band aids where the clip on hits. Some small dents in the front fender. A few scratches and dings here and there. Paint is begining to spider crack on the fiberglass stuff where the mounts are. Overall looks pretty good. Clean. Not a high buck show peice by any means, but looks good. Get's alot of looks and questions.

IT HAS ALUMINUM SPOKE WHEELS WITH GOOD RUBBER AND DECENT CHROME. EVERYTHING ON THIS BIKE WORKS. THERE ARE SOME PROBLEMS WITH THE ELECTRIC START, BUT I GUESS THAT IS COMMON WITH THESE BIKES. THE STARTER BUTTON ON THE CONTROL IS MISSING ALSO. STARTS EASY WITH THE KICK START. |

damn, what to say about this motorcycle... well its still older than me. and its named "bristols" cuz bristols are good....
I found it on craigslist for $300, "it ran in october couldnt get it to start in january. " i gave the kid $50 to hold it for me. i wont go into details but it didnt take much to get it running.
my friend "bates" had a basket case honda CL350 that we were putting together, that wasent going fast enough for either of us and he really wanted to ride. i found this we got it to my garage and it was running great with in 2 days. at this point it still needs alot more "cafe" influance but hopefuly by this weekend it will have a cafe seat pounded out, that will deffinitly help the looks!
