1971 BMW R75/5 Cafe Racer Cus Cafe Racer BMW R75/5 Cafe Racer Cus 1971 0 This motorcycle is kind of infamous and photos of it, particularly one taken at Diamond Head in Hawaii, can be found all over the internet. The history behind this bike is that I read a one-page article in the June 1998 BMW Owner's News magazine which was written by a guy in Hawaii that built up a pair of custom BMW R75s. One was a cruiser and the other was a sport bike. I was so intrigued with the look of the sport BMW he made that I cut out the article and put it in my desk drawer at work. I looked at it so often over the following months that I decided I had to have something like it. But once I started shopping for R75/5s I found they looked nothing like the bike in the magazine. After-market components for customizing BMWs are virtually non-existent. I contacted the author/custom fabricator in Hawaii and over the course of several emails and discussions about making me a seat like the one in the photo he agreed to sell me his bike. Kevin McDonald was the customizer that created this Sport bike. Kevin modeled and made all the fiberglass molds; front fender, rear fender, seat, ram air scoop and drum brake scoops. Kevin made the molds, laid the fiberglass, painted the bike, everything. Kevin also rebuilt the 1986 R80 engine, machined the heads to accept the R75 cylinder heads, rebuilt the 1986 5-speed trans, and did the entire mechanical build of the bike. The /5 enjoys the benefits of 12-volt electrical systems and electric starter. Old BMWs are simple to maintain and easy to work on. Air -cooled engines mean no coolant systems of course, and the drum brakes mean no hydraulic system and a more vintage look. The exhaust system on this bike is stainless steel (Staintune) so it will never rust or need replacement. Kevin rebuilt the engine and trans just before selling it to me. He did not reset the odometer. There were slightly over 5K miles on the bike's odometer when I got it. It reads slightly less than 12K miles now. So the engine and trans really have about 7K miles on them. The bike runs perfectly. It has a lightened flywheel and revs quickly with fast acceleration. The clutch pull is extremely light. The gear selection can be a little clunky, but I would say it's on par with every BMW airhead gearbox. Features: Custom machined rigid front fork brace Custom 'bobbed' fiberglass front fender Progressive front fork springs Composite fiberglass Ram-Air induction Composite air cooling vents on polished front brake hub R75 valve covers with 'Rennsport' style allen screw removal Timing cover vented for improved cooling R100 cam Ported and dual-plugged R75 cylinder heads, machined to fit R80 cylinders Black Diamond high-flow intake and exhaust valves 280 Watt output alternator Polished R-80 engine case, internals and cylinders Rods, rocker arms and all surfaces have been relieved, polished and where applicable, balanced to 1/50 of a gram 5-speed (polished) transmission Akront 2.15 aluminum alloys w/SS spokes Gold cadmium plated battery tray (for corrosion resistance) Polished final drive Custom solo saddle Custom 'Sport' rear fender with integrated tail light housing Stainless steel "Staintune" exhaust system Deep oil sump Trussed rear swing-arm Koni Shocks
1984 BMW R100 Cafe Racer BMW R100 1984 0
1974 BMW R90S Cafe Racer BMW R90S 1974 0 The "R90Swiss" is a "work in progress" nearing completion after 6 years of collecting and modifying vintage parts and adapting them to my personal taste. Painted in the colours of the Swiss flag, in homage to my place of residency and nationality of my lovely wife. The motor and 38-mm Dell'Ortos are essentially stock for the sake of reliability. An E-Z clutch, K&N filters, San Jose BMW Cool Covers complete the aesthetic and functional personalization. The frame features San Jose BMW diagonal braces and an enlarged swing arm to accommodate a fatter 130 rear tire. Meanwhile, the ex-rear rim is now laced to the front hub, and fitted to a set of period Marzocchi Sport forks. Paulo Terozzi clip-on’s and /7 BMW controls operate Speigler semi-floating front rotors with Brembo P7 callipers. Rear shocks are period (Japanese made) Red Wing aluminium body shocks. The flat black exhausts are UK made by Brituro. A 3/4 Scherb Knoscher fairing will soon be fitted. Stainless steel mudguards, battery covers, batter box, fasteners throughout. An aluminium "2-place" café racer seat is now in fabrication. I hope to show you the completed project by Spring 2010
